Here’s a quick and realistic look at church growth trends by the numbers.
- A 2017 Barna study says less Americans are attending church than in previous years.
- The United States Census Bureau records note that the nation sees a net loss of approximately 3,000 churches every year (approximately 4,000 close while 1,000 open).
Some of the ministries most effective in engaging young people are youth ministry organization designed for that specific purpose. It’s not just that these organizations don’t have any other calling, and so they are able to concentrate on what college or high school students need. They also know how to connect with their demographic and continuously update the tools by which they do so.
Women’s ministries play a vital role across the United States today. They promote the Gospel, provide mentoring and training for other women, encourage spiritual growth, and provide community foundations in all types of neighborhoods. Some organizations concentrate on big picture concepts, raising up speakers at major conferences and producing books and movies with Christian values. Others concentrate on grass-roots efforts, providing mom’s groups, small workshops or service to women in need.
Military service members sacrifice their own comfort, freedom and even sometimes lives for that purpose, often ending up with PTSD and other challenges as a result.
Today, Christian leaders across the nation are reaching out to these men and women. Leaders within a variety of ministries have a tremendous heart for service men and women, and they are speaking out, taking action and encouraging others to do the same to assist veterans and active duty military members. Here’s a look at some of those organizations.
According to Pew Research Center, almost half of Americans say they use prayer to help them make major decisions, and more than half of Christians note that praying regularly is a critical component of the Christian lifestyle. When many people consider prayer, they think about solitary communication with God. Individual prayer and reflection is certainly an important part of the Christian lifestyle and spiritual growth, but praying together with other Christians can also be important.
Churches face a particular set of challenges when it comes to communicating with the public. After all, church leaders not only need to speak in a way that resonates with a wide demographic, they also need to effectively deliver information that aligns with their core philosophies and beliefs — and tap into all of the best available technological platforms to ensure that they’re getting their message out in a place that people will actually see and respond to it.
A church can have a thriving congregation that believes in the gospel. However, sometimes, it’s not enough for church leaders to focus on fostering their message within the congregation. It’s also important to communicate outwardly to the congregation — to help both spread God’s message and to grow church membership. In order to effectively communicate beyond the walls of the church, it’s important for church leaders to undertake outreach efforts. Church outreach can help the church minister to a wider community than just the church membership and even can help convince more people to become members.
It’s no secret that churches across the nation are struggling with members, and part of the reason is that the country has seen an overall drop in faith. According to Pew Research, almost a quarter of the nation ticks the box “none of the above” when asked to identify their faith, which is close to the number of people who identify as Evangelical. Part of the reason for this growing loss of church and faith allegiance is that young people, particularly millennials, are avoiding church — even if they grew up there.
